When a columnar object (vortex generator) is inserted into the flow, the boundary layer separates from the surface and vortices called Karman vortex trains in the opposite direction of rotation are alternately generated in the rear flow. The flow velocity or flow rate is measured by measuring the frequency at which this vortex train is generated.
