Description

Drilling fluids are used during many drilling activities, such as water well drilling, geothermal drilling, and drilling for oil and gas in horizontal or directional applications. Drilling fluids or slurries are also commonly used in mining, tunneling, and when drill shafts are made. To assure the success of a drilling operation the right physical and chemical properties of drilling fluids have to be determined before using them in the field.

Slurry Mud Test Kits comply with the requirements of API RP 13B-1 or the corresponding international standard ISO 10414 for field testing of drilling fluids. The slurry test kit may carry the most needed instruments to determine drilling fluids as well as cement slurries. All testing instruments are well arranged in a high-impact case. The content may be customized. The following properties may be determined:

  • Viscosity
  • Density
  • Water hardness value
  • pH value
  • Sand content
  • Filtration

1006 Type Mud Funnel Viscosimeter

Mud funnel is a rugged, easy to operate instrument to for rapid, on the spot measurements of mud viscosity. The rate of gelation and the density of the slurry considerably influence the viscosity measurement. Frequent reporting of the funnel viscosity makes it possible for mud engineers to abserve sudden changes in the slurry viscosity and to make corrective action when necessary.Funnel viscosity is the ratio of the speed of the slurry as tit passes through the outlet tube (shear rate) to the force weight of the slurry) causing the slurry to flow seconds required for one quart of slurry to flow out a full funnel.

Procedure:

  1. Collect a fresh slurry sample.
  2. Hold the funnel erect with a finger over the outlet tube, and pour the slurry into the funnel through the screen until the slurry level reaches the bottom of the screen.( The screen will filter out the larger particles that could clog the outlet tube.)
  3. Quickly remove your ginger from the outlet tube, and at the same time, begin timing the slurry outflow.
  4. Allow one quart (946ML) of slurry to flow from the funnel into a measuring container.
  5. Record the seconds it takes for the quart of slurry to flow from the funnel. Report this value as the funnel viscosity. Also record the temperature of the slurry samples.

Calibration check:Periodically check the calibration of the funnel by measuring the viscosity of fresh water. The funnel viscosity of one quart of fresh water at 70±5° F(21±3°F) is26±0.5 second. If the funnel is out of calibration, clean it using a pipe cleaner to make sure that nothing is obstructing the outlet. If the funnel continues to give an incorrect reading for fresh water after cleaning, then the outlet tube has probably been damaged and the funnel should be replace.

Maintenance:

  1. Clean and dry the funnel and any others accessoies thoroughly after each use.
  2. Do not bend or flatten the brass orifice in the bottom of the funnel, as it can make readings inaccurate.

There are 2 Types of Slurry Mud Test Kits

NA-1 Type Mud Sand Content Test Kit

Mud Sand Content Test Kit is made of a 200-mesh sand screen, a plastic funnel, and a glass measuring tube.

Procedure :

  1. Fill the measuring tube up to the line labeled “100”, and then add clear water to the line labeled “250”. Close the mouth of the tube with your thumb and shake vigorously.
  2. Pour the mixture into the tube through the screen. Continue adding clear water to the tube, shaking it. and pouring the contents through the screen until the tube is clear.
  3. Flush the screen with clear water to wash away the remaining fluid and shale particles until all that remains on the screen is sand.
  4. Fit the large end of the funnel over the top of the screen holder and slowly invert the screen and funnel assembly, fitting the tip of the funnel into the mouth of the glass measuring tube. The quantity of sand that has settled and using the scale on the outside of the tube, determine the percentage of the total mud volume that is sand. Report the value as “% by Volume”sand.

NB-1 Type Mud Balance

The mud balance is used to determine the density or cement slurries. The mud balance is designed so that the mud cup at one end of the arm is balanced by a fixed counterweight at the opposite end, with s sliding weight rider free to move along a graduated scale. A level bubble is mounted on the beam to ensure accurate balancing.

Technical parameters :

  1. Measuring range:0.96–2.0g/cm3
  2. Accuracy:0.1g/cm3
  3. Mud cup capacity:140cm3

Procedure :

  1. Fill the cup with mud to be weighed.
  2. Place the lid on the cup and seat it firmly but slowly with a twisting motion. Be sure some mud runs out of the hole in the cap.
  3. With the hole in the cap covered with one finger, wash or wipe all mud from the outside of the cup and arm.
  4. Set the knife on the fulcrum and move the sliding weight along the graduated arm until the cup and arm are balanced.
  5. Read the density of the mud at the left-hand edge of the sliding weight.
  6. Report the result to the nearest scale division in lb/gal,lb/ft3,S.G., or psi/1.000ft of depth.
  7. Wash the mud from the cup immediately after wash use. it is absolutely essential that all parts of the mud balance be kept clean if accurate results are to be obtained.
